AWS D1.1 vs ISO 3834: A Welding Standards Buyer's Guide

Two different kinds of standard

AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code — Steel) is a technical code that defines how structural steel welds must be designed, qualified, executed and inspected. ISO 3834 is a quality-management standard for welding — it certifies that a company's welding processes are controlled, rather than specifying weld details. In short: AWS D1.1 governs the welds; ISO 3834 governs the welding organisation.

What AWS D1.1 specifies

AWS D1.1 covers weld joint design, prequalified procedures, welder qualification, acceptance criteria and inspection for structural steel. It's widely specified across the Gulf for buildings, bridges and structures, and is closely aligned with AISC steel construction practice.

What ISO 3834 specifies

ISO 3834 sets quality requirements for fusion welding — covering procedures, welder qualification records, equipment, traceability and inspection management. It's often required alongside EN 1090 for structural steelwork destined for European-specified projects.

Which should your project specify?

For American/AISC-aligned structures, AWS D1.1 is the natural fit. For European/EN-aligned projects, ISO 3834 + EN 1090 is typically required. Many capable fabricators work to both. The key is that your fabricator can produce qualified procedures and welder certs for whichever code your consultant specifies.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AWS D1.1 the same as ISO 3834?

No. AWS D1.1 is a technical welding code for structural steel; ISO 3834 is a welding quality-management standard for the organisation.

Which welding standard is used in the UAE and Qatar?

Both are seen. AWS D1.1 is common for AISC-aligned structures; ISO 3834/EN 1090 for European-specified projects.

Can one fabricator meet both?

Yes — many fabricators maintain procedures and welder qualifications to satisfy whichever code the project specifies.
