ASME B31.3 Process Piping Explained for Project Owners

What is ASME B31.3?

ASME B31.3 is the international code for Process Piping — the rulebook governing the design, materials, fabrication, assembly, examination and testing of piping in refineries, chemical plants, and other process facilities. If your project moves fluids or gases under pressure, B31.3 is almost certainly the standard your fabricator must follow.

Why it matters for owners

For a project owner, B31.3 compliance is what protects you from leaks, failures and rejected work. It dictates allowable stresses, wall thickness, joint design, welding qualification and the level of examination (visual, RT, UT) required for each fluid service category. A fabricator who genuinely works to B31.3 gives you piping that passes inspection the first time and performs safely for decades.

Materials and traceability

B31.3 ties each component back to its material certificate. Carbon steel, stainless and alloy spools all need documented traceability from mill cert to finished spool. This matters during commissioning and audits — and it's a key thing to verify when choosing a fabricator.

Welding and examination

Welds must follow qualified procedures (WPS/PQR per ASME Section IX) executed by coded welders. Depending on fluid service, a percentage of welds undergo radiographic (RT) or ultrasonic (UT) testing. Higher-risk services demand more examination. Reputable fabricators document all of this in an inspection package handed over with the spools.
